Why we're launching right in the heart of the Colmore BID

A photo went up on our social pages this month.... Me, stood in the middle of a big empty room in Birmingham city centre, arms out, grinning like an idiot.
That room is about to become Pain Free Performance. And we're on a mission to solve some serious problems for the professionals of this city, from right there in that space.
So I thought I'd write down what those problems actually are. Properly, not in carousel-sized chunks.
The city centre has plenty of options. None of them were built for you.
If you work in or around the Colmore BID and you want to stay fit and active, you're not short of choices. Faceless 24-hour gyms. Endless yoga and Pilates. Hyrox, spin, bootcamps. And if none of it excites you enough to actually get started, that's totally normal.
Some of those options are brilliant, for the right person, at the right stage in life. But if you're 40 plus, carrying a few old injuries, or you simply haven't trained for a while, they can be genuinely daunting places. A packed gym floor on a Monday morning. A class full of people half your age moving at twice your speed. Queuing for machines. Nobody checking whether the exercise in front of you is right for your back or your knees.
So many of the people we meet have been burnt before. They jumped into a class they weren't ready for. They did PT with someone enthusiastic but inexperienced, who didn't meet them where they were. Or worse, they hurt themselves following a generic online programme written for someone half their age.
Then there's the other end of the spectrum that is just as common and possibly even worse. Years spent looking for answers from a physiotherapist's or chiropractor's couch. You get a handful of rubber band exercises, things settle for a few weeks, then the problem comes back. To be fair to the clinicians, that's largely the model they work in: get you out of pain, back to baseline, discharge with advice on exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
Nothing wrong with it as far as it goes. It's just not the same thing as rebuilding your strength beyond where it was before, and it doesn't keep you strong, active and healthy afterwards.
Intimidating or generic fitness on one side. Clinical care that stops at baseline on the other.
Ten years of coaching professionals around Birmingham city centre, people commuting in from Harborne, Edgbaston, Sutton Coldfield or Barnt Green while juggling demanding jobs and family life, all telling the same story with the same outcome.
Law, finance, professional services. People who deal with career professionals all day, and keep getting let down the moment it comes to their own body.
A few niggles shouldn't stop you. They're the reason to train.
Here's the belief the whole studio is built on. Being over 40, carrying old injuries, or having had a few years out shouldn't stop you doing the things you love, and living a healthy, active life.
Those aren't reasons to stop training. They're reasons to keep training, stay strong, and make sure today's niggles don't turn into serious problems down the road.
Most of the professionals we work with already get this. They're not chasing a six-week crash diet for their next Dubai trip. Although looking better on holiday is a perfectly good side effect, and nobody's pretending otherwise. They see training as proactive healthcare. Muscle mass, bone density, injury prevention, reducing the risk of chronic health conditions: the list goes on, and it's the stuff that carries you through your 40s and into your 50s and 60s.
What they've struggled to find is somewhere that delivers it to the standard they'd expect in their own work, and that actually fits into their daily life and routine as opposed to fighting against it.
So here's what we're building...
A private personal training gym in the heart of the Colmore Business District, built for people 40 plus, staffed by career professionals who build the programme around you. Your history. Your experience in the gym, and any injuries you've picked up along the way.
In practice, that means coaches and clinicians who understand training as well as injury, working hand in hand under one roof, so you're never stuck in no-man's land between the physio and the gym. Appointment-led personal training sessions accompanied by clinical assessment when you need it. A timetable built around a professional's diary: before work, on your lunch break, or on the way back to the train.
Private, clean, supportive. No queues for kit. No crowds. Nobody making you feel like you don't belong there.
The less daunting option. The one you've been looking for and couldn't quite name.
We'll be sharing the whole build as that empty room takes shape, so follow along on any of our social channels, or join the mailing list to be the first to know when things are really moving.
And if this already sounds like it was made for you, it probably was.
